Climate and Climate Tech Predictions for 2025

From 2025 temperature predictions, to Canadian climate change impacts, to climate and sustainability predictions in 2025, we have the latest climate news and information in this week's ClimateWatch newsletter.

Good morning and welcome back! We hope you all had a happy new year!

As many people have been sharing their resolutions and predictions for 2025, climate experts have been as well. In today’s newsletter, we share temperature, climate tech, and sustainability predictions for 2025, and highlight a recent study about the impacts of climate change in Canada.

Enjoy!

🥵 2025 Predicted to Be in Top 3 Warmest Years on Record

The Met Office in the U.K. issued its outlook for 2025 and predicts that it will likely be one of the three warmest years on record for global average temperature, falling behind 2024 and 2023. The Met Office team suggests that despite the tropical Pacific moving toward La Nina which drives slightly cooler conditions, and despite a lack of warming influence from El Nino, the average global temperature in 2025 is forecast to be between 1.29C and 1.53C above average. If that does happen, it would be the 13th year in succession that temperatures will have reached at least 1C above pre-industrial levels. It is likely to also be the third year in succession that temperatures are expected to exceed 1.3C.

🔥 British Columbia Shares Climate Impacts in Canada

According to a recent study, Canadian forests are increasingly primed for severe, uncontrollable wildfires due to climate change and suggests there is a pressing need to proactively mitigate. Some areas of Canada are experiencing 2 to 5 more days conducive to high-severity fires than previous decades. Ottawa’s ice fishing season is shrinking due to climate change. The season used to run from January 1 to March 15, but in recent years has lasted only 35 days. Some Canadian cities are losing as many as 19 days of winter each year due to warmer temperatures. High levels of road salt have been linked to killing fertilized salmon eggs, raising concerns about salt levels in local streams during the winter.

🚗 Climate Tech and Sustainability Predictions for 2025

Leaders in the climate tech and sustainability have provided expert predictions for the industries in 2025. Some of their predictions are as follows: The 2020s must be the decade of bold decarbonization. Fossil fuel asset value will decline as renewable energy continues to grow. Commercial EV adoption hinges on infrastructure and incentives. Global companies will double down on climate justice. Sustainability roles will become more cross-functional. AI will transform emissions tracking and forecasting. Decarbonization is going back on the suppliers. Organizations prioritizing overall carbon management will drive more meaningful change. Regulations will slow impactful reductions. Climate action’s new reality is that market forces will trump policy.

That’s all for this week! If you enjoyed our newsletter, please share it with your friends!
